Suppose you’ve inherited a chunk of money and are now on the lookout for a luxurious car in which you could sit back and relax. Something that allows you to stretch your legs with ample space in the rear while also basking in luxury. Sure, you could go with the obvious options from Rolls Royce or Bentley. Except, according to Rory Reid, there’s a new pinnacle of uber-luxury that deserves your attention.

With a new S-Class comes a new Maybach, or Mercedes-Maybach as they’re now called. The 2021 Maybach line-up includes three trim levels, each based on how many zeros are in your bank account. It starts with the “entry-level” Maybach S580 equipped with a 3.9-liter V8. But, say your bank balance resembles that of a telephone number. Then the top of the range S680 will no doubt be the one to plump for. The S680 is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 5.9-liter V12 loaded with German precision and a host of modern technological features.

As you’d expect, the rear seat is the place to be in such a car luxobarge. The S680 boasts thicker glass in the C pillar to reduce noise, seats that massage your calves, and active noise canceling thanks to a mental 4D Burmeister sound system. You also get powered rear doors and Champaign flutes that the S-Class’s rear cupholders can automatically clamp down.

If you decide to drive yourself, the experience isn’t as dull as you’d expect either. That V12 under the hood makes 600 hp (608 PS/447 kW) and 900 Nm (664 ft-lb) of torque and it’s good for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of just 4.5 seconds, And that’s not all. It has an active anti-roll system keeping the car flat at all times. You also get a 1500 ($2000) option for rear-wheel steering that dramatically reduces the car’s turning circle.

At just over $200,000, the S680 Maybach is reserved for a select few. But, if you are one of those looking out for your next versatile continent crusher, then as Reid says, the S680 might just be the best uber luxury car out there right now.
