Having already entered the compact segment with the N versions of the i30 and Veloster, Hyundai’s sports division has launched its smallest model yet: the i20 N.

A subcompact hot hatchback, it has the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Ford Fiesta ST in its sights. It’s also about the same size as the GR Yaris, but the Toyota has an all-wheel drive system, whereas the i20 N and its rivals are offered strictly with front-wheel drive – plus, the GR Yaris is, essentially, a homologation special.

The Korean automaker says the i20 N was inspired by their rally car. It has beefed up looks, with the usual N touches and red accents, a big rear wing and standard 18-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. Space inside is fairly decent for a supermini, it has some lively trim and front sports seats, and it’s equipped with the latest tech and safety features.

The i20 N is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four that produces 201 HP and 203 pound-feet (275 Nm) of torque, which are channeled to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The car weighs 2,624 lbs (1,190 kg), and it’s capable of accelerating to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.7 seconds, and up to 143 mph (230 km/h).

As expected, the suspension is a bit on the firm side, but Hyundai has done a good job at balancing it. It corners quite nicely, but the electric steering doesn’t provide that much feedback. Also, another drawback is that you really have to work the engine to get the most of it, according to Top Gear Magazine’s review. But the question is, could the first-ever i20 N be as exciting to drive as the Fiesta ST?
