While the likes of Audi and Nissan have released coloring books to keep their fans entertained while stuck at home, Volkswagen has gone so far as to release a guide on how to make a VR headset at home to watch how the all-electric ID.3 is made.

You can find the full list of instructions and tutorial here. All you will need for your homemade VR headset is the provided template, a shoebox or pizza box (or any cardboard box), a printer, scissors, syringe or plastic straw, plastic water bottle, X-Acto knife, glue gun or epoxy, rubber band, and your smartphone.

Now you may ask yourself, ‘I can easily make a VR headset from cardboard, but what about the lenses?’ Well, VW provides a step-by-step guide on how to make the lenses required of a VR headset using a plastic bottle to form a biconvex lens.

If you’re not the practical type and can’t be bothered with the hassle of making your own VR goggles, six 360-degree videos from the ID.3’s production line are available to view below courtesy of the Petersen Automotive Museum. While the clips are only relatively short and don’t capture the entire building process of the electric hatchback, they are still very interesting. We found the video from inside the paint booth particularly intriguing as it shows the robot arms spray paint over the car while VW employees watch on from a nearby room.
