Getting stuck behind slow-moving vehicles on rural highways can be very annoying and quite often, overtaking such vehicles requires a bit of patience to pick the perfect time to pull it off safely.
In Australia, there are hundreds of rural highways with only a single lane of traffic for each direction. Clearly frustrated the cars up the road weren’t quite doing the speed limit, the driver of a large pickup truck towing a boat thought it’d be a good idea to attempt an overtake. It wasn’t.
Dashcam footage of the scene shows the driver pull out to overtake and initially, everything appears to be in order. However, as the car started to gain speed (likely traveling at a touch over 110 km/h / 68 mph), the boat trailer starts to fishtail.

Unable to correct the out-of-control trailer, the driver tries to merge back into the correct lane but this only makes things worse as the flailing boat pushes the pickup into a crash barrier, rolling the vehicle onto its side. As traffic stops, the pickup can be seen resting on its side with the trailer still attached, while the boat itself can be seen in tatters further down the road.
While the pickup driver could have easily and safely executed the overtake without the boat, they mustn’t have taken into consideration how towing a heavy boat would affect things. Hopefully, no one was injured in this accident – and better think twice before attempting such maneuvers while towing something…
