The Mercedes-AMG G63, Suzuki Jimny, and Jeep Wrangler are all extremely capable off-road, but which is best when the going gets tough?

To see which of these three boxy off-roaders is the most well-rounded, Carwow pitted them against one another for a series of tests, scoring the trio depending on how they performed in each test to give the G63, Jimny, and Wrangler a final score.

In the first test, the trio line up for a drag race up a steep and slippery hill. Unsurprisingly, the G63 with its 577 HP, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and three locking differentials wins. Impressively, the little Jimny beats out the Wrangler despite only featuring a tiny 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 101 HP and no locking differentials.

The second test assesses the maneuverability of the three before a third test, where each of the off-roaders were driven along an exceptionally steep bank to test out the articulation and strength of each chassis. Two of the other tests saw the trio crawl down a hill to see which has the best Hill-Descent Control system, while the final test saw each try to climb a rocky hill. Only the Jimny and G63 managed to complete that one…

Clearly, the G63, Jimny and Wrangler appeal to very different people and are far from direct rivals, particularly since they belong to distinct segments within the off-road vehicle market and are priced very differently. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see how the three go about their business and are able to conquer some very difficult terrain.
