The first reviews of the 2020 Corvette Stingray came out yesterday and now, the first review comparing the new ‘Vette to the latest Porsche 911 Carrera S has been published thanks to Motor Trend.
Both the new Corvette Stingray and 911 Carrera S line-up very nicely on paper. They are similar in size (the C8 is a few inches larger) and have similar weight distributions with 61 per cent of the Corvette’s weight in 3LT form sitting over the rear wheels compared to the 64 per cent of the 911.

In terms of power, the Chevy has 495 HP and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) compared to the Porsche’s 443 HP and 390 lb-ft (528 Nm). In a straight-line, the Corvette had a slight edge during testing, accelerating to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 2.8 seconds compared to the 911’s 2.9 seconds and doing the quarter-mile in 11.1 seconds at 123.2 mph (198.2 km/h), beating the Porsche’s 11.2-second time, although the latter achieved a higher speed at 124.3 mph (200 km/h).
Then we come to cornering. During skidpad testing, the Corvette recorded an average of 1.04 lateral g while the 911 recorded a superior 1.09 g. These results translated into Motor Trend’s figure-eight lap where the Porsche set a time of 22.7-seconds at 0.94 average lateral g to the Corvette’s 23.3-second lap at 0.90 g. The Corvette doesn’t perform all that well because of the understeer it experiences. This, according to the publication, has likely been intentionally engineered into the car to make it safer, as most owners would have never driven a mid-engined car before.
In the end, the publication concluded that the Porsche is the better sports car, but the Corvette is the better overall package.
