Venezuelans have been modifying their vehicles to run on cooking gas because of frequent fuel shortages that have led to dayslong lines for gasoline, according to a report from Reuters.

The practice is illegal and dangerous. It has been linked to at least one explosion, and experts say prolonged exposure to propane is a health risk. But some citizens of the South American country say they have little choice at a time when nearly all refineries have shut down and U.S. sanctions make imports difficult.

“There’s no fuel in Venezuela, and I had to set my car up like this to be able to work and bring home my daily bread,” Senen Aguirre told Reuters.

Gasoline is nearly free to Venezuelans who wait in line but has been selling for more than $11 a gallon on the black market.

Alfredo Gonzalez used a kitchen faucet and other items to fit a pickup with a propane cylinder. Those who have made such alterations have to be vigilant to keep the police from impounding their vehicle.

“We’re working like smugglers,” Gonzalez said. “The police persecution is really heavy. They say it’s dangerous.”
