A number of cars and trucks got trapped on State Route 240 in West Richland, Washington on New Year’s Eve due to huge tumbleweeds blocking the road.

Yak Tri News reports that local authorities were forced to close the highway at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and were unable to re-open it for nearly 10 hours.

Local trooper Chris Thorson says strong local winds blew the tumbleweeds into an area near the roadways filled with berms. Consequently, the tumbleweeds got stuck on the highway and a number of vehicles actually got buried in the tumbleweeds after driving into them.

In order to remove the tumbleweeds, local transportation crews used snowplows to clear the roadway and free trapped vehicles. There were at least five cars and one eighteen-wheeler semi-truck stuck in the pile-up of tumbleweeds that was hundreds of yards long and up to 30 feet tall.

Trooper Thorson revealed that police found an abandoned car trapped in the tumbleweeds when the sun rose on New Year’s Day. No one was inside the vehicle and fortunately, no one impacted by the bizarre occurrence was injured.

A special shout-out has to be given to the local authorities who worked throughout the night and welcomed in the New Year while clearing the roadway to ensure traffic could start moving again.
