Chevrolet hasn’t started building the midengine Corvette yet, but it managed to deliver the first one last week. Or, at least it pretended to on live TV.

Chevy gives a vehicle to the MVP of the World Series in conjunction with its Major League Baseball sponsorship. For the past two years, the prize was a Silverado. Chevy gave away two Camaros before that and a Colorado — the truck filled with “technology and stuff,” as a nervous regional manager memorably stammered — back in 2014.

This year, Chevy’s 14th season bestowing free wheels upon a multimillionaire, it went with a 2020 Corvette, the perfect car to show off, except for the fact that it doesn’t go into production until later this year.

Still, Chevy’s U.S. vice president, Brian Sweeney, didn’t let that inconvenience stop him from handing the key to a Torch Red Z51 to pitcher Stephen Strasburg after the Washington Nationals’ come-from-behind Game 7 victory.

“We’re really proud to award you our all-new, Chevrolet midengine, just-announced, ready-to-build-in-a-couple-months Corvette Stingray,” Sweeney said.

GM told Automobile that the Corvette on the field was indeed a preproduction car. Strasburg will get his actual car, built to his specifications, sometime next year.
